27.04.2017c-LEcta’s Enzyme enabled a novel enzyme cascade - the synthesis of biopolymer precursors
The economic synthesis of valuable compounds by multi enzymatic transformations is gaining more and more attention. This is because the combination of different enzyme activities can make novel, economic synthetic routes accessible and may drive reversible reaction to completion. At the same time the use of enzymes obviates the need for harmful reactants. Especially given by the possibility to create and to incorporate artificial (de novo or engineered wild type) enzymes into these processes, enzymes cascades become a promising powerful tool for the production of valuable compounds in various industries.

As a proof of concept, the group of Prof. Bernhard Hauer1 established a novel route from the natural feedstock ricinolelic acid to sebacic acid, which is used as a precursor for biopolymers. The reaction comprises a four enzymes cascade: two wild type, one de novo designed and one engineered enzyme from c-LEcta. Only due to the utilization of two artificial enzymes this reaction is rendered viable.

With respect to their future potential, enzyme cascades play an important role at c-LEcta and are used in a variety of product development projects of the company.
